WASHINGTON, D.C. — Medicaid continues to serve as an essential source of health coverage for tens of millions of Americans. In a new national survey, a decisive majority of voters (80%) report favorable views of the program, and 93% believe it’s important to have a strong, sustainable Medicaid program.
The findings come at a critical moment as Congress’s recently passed One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBB) is set to cut Medicaid funding by nearly $1 trillion. Nearly two-thirds (65%) of all voters oppose cuts to Medicaid funding, and 82% of voters are concerned about the consequences of OBBB on health care costs and their access to care.
Experts estimate that the OBBB funding cuts will lead to more Americans losing their Medicaid coverage and benefits, force hospitals and providers to cut back on vital services or close altogether and increase costs for all Americans. With the Medicaid provisions already starting to take effect, states are making decisions on how to remake their programs to address the lost funding, meaning the devastating impacts to patients, health systems and communities will soon become reality.
The poll surveyed a national sample of approximately 10,000 registered voters. Key findings include:
- Nearly all voters (93%) think it is important or very important to have a strong, sustainable Medicaid program in the United States.
- Four in five voters (80%) have a favorable view of Medicaid. In fact, voters are more than 6 times more likely to have a favorable view of Medicaid than an unfavorable view.
- Nearly two-thirds of voters (65%) oppose cutting funding for Medicaid, including 50% who strongly oppose cuts.
- 82% of voters are concerned about the consequences of OBBB on health care costs and their access to care.
These and other findings, including in-depth, state-by-state enrollment data and polling, can be found in the 2025 Medicaid Dashboard.
