Medicaid is an essential safety net, ensuring that mothers, women, and children have access to affordable, high-quality health care. The program provides coverage for critical services such as screenings and immunizations, family planning, prenatal services, childbirth, and postpartum care.
The Association of Maternal & Child Health Programs (AMCHP), a Modern Medicaid Alliance partner, has served for nearly 75 years as a partner and advocate for state public health leaders and others working to improve maternal and child health public health systems.
Fast Facts About Medicaid and Maternal and Child Health
- 16% of non-elderly women – including 40% of low-income women and 38% of single mothers – are covered by Medicaid.
- Over 40% of all births are financed by Medicaid every year.
- Research shows that maternal mortality rates are lower in states that have expanded Medicaid compared to non-expansion states.
Supporting Women and Children During Medicaid Redeterminations
Since April 2023, states have been conducting the Medicaid redeterminations process to verify whether current Medicaid enrollees are still eligible for the program. During this “unwinding” process, women and children are at risk of losing coverage due to ineligibility or administrative issues. Ensuring continuous access to Medicaid coverage is crucial for safeguarding the health and financial safety of vulnerable women and children in the US.
AMCHP is developing resources to help mothers and maternal and child health (MCH) professionals navigate the Medicaid redeterminations process.
Examples of these informative resources include:
- Millions are at Risk of Coverage Loss: What can MCH Professionals Do Now to Support Families in the Medicaid Redetermination Process?, a guide to ensure MCH professionals are equipped to actively support families in the current Medicaid renewal process as well as future renewal cycles. The resource provides MCH programs with strategies to inform families on their options in the event of coverage loss and highlights key partnerships MCH programs can leverage to connect families with community-based experts.
- We Lost Medicaid Coverage. Now What?, a guide to help families understand the Medicaid renewal process, including the current redetermination process, why they may have lost their Medicaid coverage, and options to help them regain coverage.
- Medicaid Redetermination: Stories from Families to Inspire Action, a podcast episode that details the impact of Medicaid disenrollment on families nationwide and provides action steps for advocates and individuals.
These resources are part of a larger AMCHP Resource Library to support health care coverage for women and children in the U.S.
AMCHP’s commitment to supporting families and MCH professionals is a crucial example of how Modern Medicaid Alliance partners are ensuring Medicaid enrollees and their families can properly navigate the redeterminations process.
