Modern Medicaid Alliance Partners Release Resources around 30th Anniversary of ADA

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law on July 26, 1990. The ADA “prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public.”

The Modern Medicaid Alliance and our partners are committed to building awareness of the significant role Medicaid plays in the lives of those living with disabilities. More than 1 in 3 adults covered by Medicaid live with a disability, and rely on Medicaid as a lifeline that increases access to the care and support they need to stay as healthy as possible. Medicaid health services and innovative programs help them stay employed and in school.

The Modern Medicaid Alliance salutes the ADA at 30 and Alliance partners who are providing important resources about the ADA this month:

  • The American Association of People with Disabilities created numerous educational and advocacy resources about the impact of the ADA on the lives of people living with disabilities, including an online photo exhibit that features important images of progress through the years.

  • APSE has infused ADA-related content throughout their virtual conference this month and is fielding a survey of employment supports providers on the impacts of COVID-19, with findings and recommendations from the survey to be released later this month.
  • Throughout this month, The Arc is focusing on Medicaid and advocating on behalf of Home and Community Based Services (HCBS), which are often needed by people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to support their needs and to live as independently as possible.
  • The National Organization on Disability (NOD) has prepared a Disability History Timeline and other resources to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the ADA.
