Washington, D.C. – Following the House Energy & Commerce Committee markup, which included unprecedented cuts to Medicaid, the Modern Medicaid Alliance issued the following statement:
“Today’s vote to slash Medicaid funding reneges on a commitment to more than 70 million Americans to ‘protect and cherish’ their coverage and access to essential care.
“Eliminating upwards of $700 billion dollars in Medicaid funding goes far beyond targeting ‘waste, fraud and abuse’ as the impact to patients will be severe. These policies represent a fundamental dismantling of a vital safety net program that would strip health coverage away from millions of Americans; cut access to essential services like primary care and prescription medicines; and push rural hospitals and health care providers beyond the brink. At a time when many lawmakers are focused on improving government efficiency and reducing red tape, this bill would instead impose costly new layers of bureaucracy and administrative hurdles, leaving states to foot the bill.
“The Modern Medicaid Alliance urges lawmakers to remove these devastating cuts before the bill moves forward to protect the care that millions of hardworking Americans depend on.”
