Updated Medicaid Dashboard offers results nationally and state by state
WASHINGTON, D.C. — (September 16, 2020) – Americans widely support Medicaid, with an overwhelming majority of Americans wanting to ensure it remains strong and stable for the millions who rely on it. That’s according to a new poll from Morning Consult, conducted on behalf of the Modern Medicaid Alliance. More information, including in-depth, state-by-state data and polling, can be accessed via the updated Modern Medicaid Alliance Medicaid Dashboard.
Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) serve more than 70 million Americans, with more than 55 million of those enrollees covered by Medicaid managed care plans. Over 15.5 million of those enrolled in Medicaid gained coverage as a result of expansion under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The COVID-19 crisis has reinforced the importance of Medicaid as a critical safety net for vulnerable populations, with one recent study estimating that nearly 27 million Americans have lost employer-sponsored insurance as a result of COVID-19.
The Medicaid Dashboard is an essential resource for federal and state leaders looking for up-to-date information on how many people are covered in a state and how each state’s Medicaid program is structured. In addition to providing the latest, most comprehensive Medicaid enrollment research and polling, the Dashboard also provides state-specific reports for all 50 states plus the District of Columbia.
The Morning Consult poll surveyed a national sample of 11,000 adults. Below are a few key takeaways from the polling housed on the Medicaid Dashboard:
- 86% of Americans say it’s important to have a strong, sustainable Medicaid program in the U.S.
- Americans are 5 times more likely to have a favorable view of Medicaid than an unfavorable view. In total, 72% of Americans have a favorable view of the program.
- Two-thirds of Americans in key 2020 swing states* (68%) oppose cutting funding for Medicaid. Fewer than 20% of Americans support cutting Medicaid funding.
“Medicaid is an essential part of American health care and the nation’s health care safety net. This new data further demonstrates Medicaid’s essential role, especially as we work together to overcome the COVID-19 crisis,” said Matt Eyles, President and CEO of America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), a founding member of the Modern Medicaid Alliance. “We are proud to support the Alliance as it continues to lead important conversations about the importance of Medicaid for all Americans.”
Medicaid is the largest health care program in the country, covering about 1 in 5 Americans, including millions of children, older adults, people with disabilities, and nearly 2 million veterans. Over the past 50 years, Medicaid has played a critical role in helping Americans when they need it most and has acted as a safety net for at-risk populations to receive high-quality, cost-effective care, including amid the COVID-19 crisis.
