Overwhelming Majority of Americans Want Strong, Sustainable Medicaid Program
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Nearly 90% of Americans think it’s important to have a strong, sustainable Medicaid program, according to a new survey conducted by Morning Consult on behalf of the Modern Medicaid Alliance, a coalition of leading advocacy organizations. The findings come at a critical moment as states continue to review whether Medicaid or CHIP enrollees are still eligible for the program following the end of the COVID-19 public health emergency.
“Millions of Americans including children depend on Medicaid and Medicaid managed care to protect their health and deliver high-quality, affordable health care coverage. Efforts to ensure people don’t lose their coverage through the current Medicaid redeterminations process further underscore the important role of Medicaid as an essential safety net for Americans,” said Robert Traynham, Executive Vice President, Public Affairs & Strategic Initiatives of AHIP, a founding member of the Modern Medicaid Alliance.
The poll surveyed a national sample of approximately 10,000 registered voters. Key findings include:
- The vast majority of voters (89%) think it is important or very important to have a strong, sustainable Medicaid program in the United States.
- Three-quarters of voters (74%) have a favorable view of Medicaid. In fact, voters are nearly 5 times more likely to have a favorable view of Medicaid than an unfavorable view.
- When asked what the most important priority of Medicaid should be, voters said affordability (25%) and access (19%).
- Two-thirds of voters (65%) oppose cutting funding for Medicaid, including 48% who strongly oppose cuts.
These and other findings, including in-depth, state-by-state enrollment data and polling, can be found in the 2023 Modern Medicaid Alliance Medicaid Dashboard.
