Key Messages on Protecting Medicaid
- Medicaid is a critical lifeline for millions of Americans — including low income, older adults, children, pregnant women, disabled and rural Americans — that ensures access to essential health care services.
- The Medicaid program plays a critical role by providing access to health care services for those most vulnerable and in need, supporting safety-net providers — particularly in rural and underserved communities — and delivering a cost-effective coverage option.
- The funding cuts under consideration would have a direct impact on Medicaid beneficiaries and their ability to access needed health care.
- Recent polling from Fabrizio Ward found that almost half of all voters have a personal or family connection to Medicaid, with just under a quarter either on Medicaid currently or were previously enrolled.
- Of non-disabled adults under 65 who rely on Medicaid, 92% are either working, caring for a family member, managing an illness or disability or attending school.
- Rural, community and children’s hospitals rely on Medicaid to sustain essential services. Cuts to Medicaid funding would hit health care providers in rural communities the hardest, forcing hospital closures, eliminating maternity care, limiting access to other vital services and triggering layoffs. The resulting losses to core health care infrastructure would endanger access to lifesaving care for everyone who lives in the affected communities.
- Medicaid also serves as a critical foundation for individual states’ economies. Research has consistently shown that proposed federal Medicaid cuts could decimate state credit ratings and force governors to make difficult choices about reducing health care access, cutting other critical programs or raising taxes.
- Congress should reject cuts to Medicaid as work continues to develop the joint fiscal year 2025 budget resolution to protect the millions of Americans who rely on the program.
